How to Read Moneylines

Reading moneylines can be tricky. They can look like odd, mysterious, strange symbols if you’re new to betting. Here, we break down how to read moneylines for beginners.

Let’s start with this example:

Sample Moneyline

Here we have a typical money line for Indianapolis vs. New Orleans. First, let’s identify a couple things: the Favorite and the Underdog. The favorite is the one who has normally has the negative (-) number, and the underdog has the positive (+) number. So, in this case, IND is the underdog, NO is the favorite. This means that NO is expected to win.

Next, look at the numbers. They should be three digits, because most moneylines are referencing $100, meaning they will tell you one of two things:

A. How much money you’ll make if you bet $100

or

B. How much money you’ll need to bet to make $100

Now, let’s connect this new fact with the favorite and underdog. If a team is favorited to win, that means that if you bet money on them, that’s less of a risk than if you bet on the underdog (the team that is less likely to win). The number next to NO is -400. Since the number is negative, it means that you’ll need to bet $400 to make $100 if NO wins.

Looking at IND, their number is +310, so what does this mean? This means that you’ll win $310 if you bet $100 if IND wins.
